Korenmolen de Hoop
Five generations of the Van Riel family worked as millers. In 1960, Grandfather Jan van Riel decided to close the mill because it was no longer profitable. With the help of Monumentenzorg, Brabantse Molens, and the Municipality of Nieuw-Ginneken, Jan's children decided to restore the mill in 1972. They transformed it into a charming restaurant with a terrace and playground.
You can enjoy a snack and a drink at the restaurant ‘Onder de Molen eten & drinken’. They offer an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail menu as well as a delicious menu. The Australian chef Josh particularly likes to use products from Bavelse and the surrounding region. Everything is fresh and homemade. And you can taste it!
Since April 2019, the mill has been owned by the Stichting Molen Bavel, who managed to restore it with contributions from the Bavelse community and national and regional subsidy providers. In August 2020, Mayor Paul Depla reopened the mill and now the millers are once again producing beautiful traditional mill products.
Tip! Order the Bourgondisch Bavel Platter: a delicious board with Molenbrood, homemade salsa verde, a spinach-zucchini dip, Italian beef, ham, various cheeses, and chorizo croquettes. Fun fact: the Molenbrood is made from the flour from their own mill.
Want to see the mill in action? You can visit on Saturdays when the Mill Shop is also open. Here, you can buy delicious mill products, such as freshly baked Molenbrood. Guided tours are available upon request with our guides.
