Grote Kerk Breda

Whichever side you approach Breda from, you can spot the 97-metre-high tower of the Grote Kerk Breda from afar. The iconic landmark of Breda. The Grote Kerk is a building with a long history and a bright future. It is a national monument, one of the top four monuments in Brabant and part of the Largest Museum in the Netherlands. In addition, the Grote Kerk Breda is developing a diverse programme in collaboration with various partners that links current affairs with the church's collection and stories. We will take you through the rich history and tell you about the ambitions for today and tomorrow.

Cultural hotspot

The Great Church Breda has a clear vision for the future: to make the church a place in the heart of the city where different generations come together and get inspired.

The church achieves this with an innovative programme that allows visitors to look at the ancient stories of the church with the knowledge of today. For this purpose, the organisation collaborates with a broad network of artists, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and cultural and social organisations.

From 14 April to 25 August, the exhibition Re-Belle can be seen in the church, for which artist Maria Roosen added colourful, contemporary accents to the monumental church.

750 years of history

The rich history of De Grote Kerk dates back to the Middle Ages. Over the 750 years that followed, construction, renovation, restoration and rebuilding have continuously taken place at this location. Prayers have been said, mourned, celebrated and admired.

We will take you on a brief journey through history and past the main monuments in the church.

Restoration and Maintenance

A monument like De Grote Kerk is never finished. Maintenance and restoration are daily tasks. At the moment, there is a restoration process ongoing which will last until 2027. These restorations are carried out using the most innovative equipment on one hand, but are finished in a traditional way by skilled sculptors.

Are you already a Friend of De Grote Kerk?

Maintenance and restoration are always necessary at De Grote Kerk Breda. There are funds available, but the church also needs to contribute significantly itself.

You can help by becoming a Friend of De Grote Kerk. Did you know that for every euro you contribute as a Friend, the government adds €2.00? There are special programmes for companies to support the church. Together, we ensure the preservation of 'our' Grote Kerk and contribute to a valuable future. Because the Grote Kerk belongs to all of us, right?

Grote Kerk as an event venue
