Vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen

Gilze-Rijen Air Base is off-limits to visitors, but there is a possibility to catch a glimpse anyway. Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, the 'De Traditiekamer Vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen' museum is open from 13:00-15:30. The museum showcases over a hundred years of aviation in the region.

In the Traditiekamer at Gilze-Rijen Air Base, you will find the military history of the municipality of Gilze-Rijen and its surroundings. Here, enthusiastic volunteers will tell you all about the history and the role that the air base played in the development of Dutch civil and military aviation.

The exhibition dates back to 1909. From the first primitive biplanes to the Apache helicopters, which tracked the Taliban in Afghanistan. The civilian part shows the involvement of the local community. From residents in the neighbouring villages who always felt closely connected to the 'flying spectacle'. And from the airfield as a source of employment and, at the same time, a target in times of war.

In the museum, you will find photos, documents, military equipment, aircraft parts, and measuring and communication equipment. You will also see aircraft models, dioramas and scale models.

Tip! Admission to the museum is free. So, why not pay a visit?
