De Haven

The harbour of Breda has a rich history that dates back to the 14th century. Today, it is a vibrant part of the city centre with welcoming restaurants, passenger jetty, canal cruises and boat rentals.

Breda had a fish market during the 14th century where sea fish was traded. Via the river Mark, the city had an open connection to the sea. Here you could also find many breweries until the 16th century. The quality of the water was poor and drinking beer was a lot healthier. The alcohol content then was a bit lower than now, though.

In the early 1960s, the harbour was filled in (with a one-vote majority in the city council) to make way for the Netherlands first underground car park. Fortunately, the historic port was restored in 2007. It is now a vibrant part of Breda with many welcoming catering establishments. In season, tour boats, canoes and motorboats are available for hire and there are mooring jetties where you can stay overnight with your boat.
