Walk the smuggling route

  • Region
At the border between Belgium and the Netherlands, smugglers used to sneak through the forests. They risked their lives to smuggle people and goods across the border. This Smugglers' Route still exists. Do you dare to walk it?

A touch of magic

If you walk the Smuggling route, you will pass through Het Markdal, forests, estates, and heathlands. Take a moment on the Strijbeekse Heide and enjoy the views over plains with heather and Scots pines. On the path in Belgium, you walk between tree-lined avenues, old Scots pines, and deciduous trees. Each season brings something different and it's always enjoyable.

Tip! From forest ranger Liza van Velzen: "The pond at Goudberg is the real highlight for me. Walking on the hill, you overlook the water with an island in the middle. It's one of the last remaining pieces of raised bog in the Netherlands. You can walk all the way around it. The silence, the atmosphere. It's magical!"

Follow the paths, and the adventure begins!

The hiking trail (9km) starts at Het Smokkelaartje in Strijbeek. Follow the poles with the smuggler's pictogram. Along the route, you will find signs with information about the smuggling history. Tip! Wear your boots in winter.
