Staying at Guesthouse Munnickenheide

A charming campsite as a base

You want to make an unforgettable visit to the beautiful city of Breda and its surroundings and are looking for inspiration for your programme including recreational accommodation. Then you've come to the right place!

At Guesthouse Munnickenheide, you can stay in a remarkable rural setting in the Brabant nature. A great base to relax and enjoy outdoor life in Breda. Within a radius of 9 km, you will find Breda, the Biesbosch, and an unspoilt section of the Zuiderwaterlinie.

    How it all began

A few years ago, owners Gerry and Gerjo Leijten started their guesthouse. Along with their three daughters, they live in a beautiful location. They wanted others to enjoy this place as well.

They converted the former pig farm into a unique accommodation with lots of possibilities. Even though the farm is no longer a working farm, there are still chickens and pigs roaming around. The best part of entrepreneurship? Deciding which direction to take with the input from guests!

    About Gerry and Gerjo

When Gerjo was 21 years old, she moved to Gerry's farm in Terheijden. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by Gerjo. She loves to talk about the enterprise, and you can tell that Brabantian hospitality is central. Gerjo explains that personal contact is highly valued as well. This is also evident from the cups of tea with treats that are already waiting for you in your lodgings. You immediately feel very welcome upon arrival.

Gerjo is responsible for ensuring that (online) marketing runs smoothly and deals with incoming requests. Gerry's task at the guesthouse is to ensure that the accommodations are in top condition. He repairs and renovates, ensures you have everything you need for a campfire and tends to the garden.

    The cosy guesthouse

At Munnickenheide, there is something for everyone. You can stay overnight in a luxury room of 50 m2 with private bathroom, or in one of the comfort rooms of 30 m2 upstairs in the renovated barn. There are also four sturdy Pods available and the possibility to pitch your own tent on the spacious campsite. Finally, there are five country-style studios with a private kitchen, available for longer stays. The location is also perfect for group accommodations. Gerry and Gerjo strive to think of everything and everyone!

The renovated pig farm has a large space where a 'to-go' vending machine is available for passers-by and a space that can be rented for various purposes. The space is cosily decorated with, among other things, self-made paintings by Gerjo with appropriate themes.

    For whom?

There is a place for every target group at the guest accommodation. Initially, the entrepreneurs expected the accommodation to attract mainly elderly people. The opposite turns out to be true: in the first few years, it mainly attracted groups. Nowadays, the guests are mainly young people, including couples, who value nature highly.

The location is also used for business purposes. This includes options for a business overnight stay, a meeting, training, or team-building workshop. Munnickenheide provides tailor-made meeting packages. Additionally, the location is popular among passing visitors, such as cyclists.

    Sleeping in a cosy Pod

Wondering what a Pod is? It offers the best of both worlds: the authentic camping feeling and the comfort of luxury sleeping, in other words: glamping! Pods are a great sleeping accommodation for both traditional campers and modern holidaymakers for a long or short holiday. The Pods are comfortably furnished with a nice bed and a table with two chairs. Each Pod offers a beautiful and wide view. And you might not think so, but there is plenty of space!

In the evening, you can enjoy the peace with a hot chocolate by a fire pit at the picnic table. Too cold outside? Sheep's wool has been used for insulation and each Pod is equipped with a heater. Nice and cosy! There are also plenty of blankets available to keep you warm. So, it's a super fun place to stay overnight in a different way.

    Luxury facilities

There is no shortage of luxury at Munnickenheide. Even if you're camping here, you could call it glamping. The accommodation has a beautiful and clean sanitary building, a short distance from the lodgings. Additionally, there is a cosy communal breakfast room and kitchen. The delicious regional breakfast includes cheese from kaasboerderij ’t Bosch, honey from the local beekeeper, and bread from the local bakery Van Dongen (winner of the best Brabant sausage roll award three times!).

Munnickenheide also has a meeting room for groups of up to 18 people.

    An unique location

Munnickenheide is located at Munnikenhof in the rural area of Terheijden. There are many activities and the surrounding area with forests, fields, meadows, and water is beautiful.

Munnickenheide is situated on the Zuiderwaterlinie between the lines of Munnikenhof and Den Hout. These are the two oldest original defensive walls with the original visible shapes and existing lunettes. The guest house is also located at the foot of De Biesbosch National Park where you can enjoy boating, cycling and walking. Of course, Breda is just around the corner, but Oosterhout is also worth a visit.

    Extraordinary arrangements

Gerry and Gerjo regularly offer various, special arrangements for both outdoor enthusiasts and food lovers.

They collaborate with partners such as Pannenkoekenhuis Koeckers, the outdoor survival course Pact van de Prinse, swimming pools and ice rink by Optisport and Spa One: the largest sauna complex in North Brabant.

    Dorpsbrouwerij Terheijden

On the grounds of Munnickenheide, in the old pigsty, you will also find Village Brewery Terheijden. This brewer believes in honest products with a green and local character. In addition to brewing their own beers, the brewery is also available for contract brewing. This results in unique beers, such as Molenkoekbier: beer in collaboration with Molen de Arend and Liniebock: a beer that fits the location.

    Sustainability and Ambition

One theme you can't ignore nowadays: sustainability. At Munnickenheide, they separate waste and try to encourage guests to do the same by using various containers. There are solar panels and a private charging station. As mentioned earlier, the pods are insulated with sheep wool. This way, they try to reuse materials. They also regularly acquire items from the thrift shop.

Gerry and Gerjo are constantly thinking about how they can improve their business. They saw the COVID-19 crisis as a good time to review their accommodation and, for example, expand it with a private wellness area that guests can book during their stay. Furthermore, they would prefer to have continuity so that they have a year-round income from this beautiful guest accommodation.

    Explore the surroundings

    The Spinola Redoubt:

On the way to the guesthouse, make a stop at the Spinola Schans. This is a defensive work from the 80 Years' War. In 1624, the Spanish army besieged Breda to starve the city and force its surrender. For this purpose, the commander Spinola had two redoubts built. The Spinola Redoubt is the one that has remained intact.

The elevated walking path offers a beautiful view of the redoubt and the surrounding landscape. Definitely worth a visit to get some fresh air or if you enjoy history.

    Munnikenhof Line:

Running through Brabant is the Zuiderwaterlinie, the oldest, longest, and most used waterline in the Netherlands. It is a defence system of fortified cities, forts, redoubts, dikes, and sluices. Regular traffic could only pass through the lines, thereby stopping the enemy.

The Munnikenhof Line is a peaceful section of the line where no battles have ever taken place. A nice walking tour to take from the guesthouse.

    For the foodies

From the premises of the guesthouse, you can walk towards the Line of the Munnikenhof. If you follow this, you will reach Pannenkoekenhuis Koeckers. Delicious pancakes with all the toppings! You can opt for an Indonesian pancake or a Mexican pancake, for example. Also, a great place for children!

Restaurant De Buren is a restaurant recommended by the owners of the guesthouse. Here you can enjoy tapas at your leisure. Another tip is the atmospheric Brasserie Woods: here you can enjoy the woods of the Vrachelse heide during your lunch or dinner.
