Going for a walk and bike ride in Princenhage

Out and about in Princenhage: Princenhage is surrounded by greenery! Nearby, you will find the Zaartbos and the Aa or Weerijs, wonderful areas for walking or cycling. What's even more exciting is that Princenhage is also the starting point of a Vincent van Gogh cycling route.

Trippelenberg Stroll

Put on your hiking boots and explore the nature surrounding Princenhage. This short walk 'Trippelenberg' runs along the dike with a beautiful view of the Zaartbos. The Zaartbos is part of the valley of the Aa or Weerijs river and consists of wet rough meadows and bushes that flood at high water levels. In the summer, Galloways graze here, a breed of cattle originally from Scotland. Due to the fluctuating water levels and heights, it is a lively area.

Tip: You can also choose to take the wellies path through the Zaartbos and pick up the route of the short walk again at Dr. Batenburglaan.

Plukroute Princenhage

How fun is this: Princenhage has its own fruit-picking route! A route through parks and streets where you can literally take a delightful walk. You can harvest fruits, berries and nuts from fruit trees and bushes, all for free! The route is indicated with stickers on lampposts and other poles along the way. There is a sign on Haagsemarkt with the entire route. Extra fun for the little ones: there is also a treasure hunt set along the route!

The Aa or Weerijs

This little river starts in Belgium and flows into the canal in Breda. In 2005, the water board tackled and redeveloped this stream valley, with the aim of preventing flooding in the city. The river now meanders and the riverbed has been widened.

You don't have to go far for beautiful nature. Along the river Aa of Weerijs, there are plenty of idyllic spots to discover, each unique in their own way every season. Aggie van Dongen created a walking map with nine walking routes of around twelve kilometres each. Sometimes you may come across a nice surprise, such as a ferry to cross the Aa of Weerijs.

Van Gogh cycling route

Follow in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. The picturesque Haagsemarkt in Princenhage is the starting point of this route. Vincent van Gogh visited this place regularly. He visited his 'Uncle Cent', who had a good reputation in the art trade. 'Uncle Cent' lived in a beautiful villa called 'Huize Mertersem' for a long time, where he had a large collection of paintings that Vincent loved.
